This video encode doesn’t seem to play (in VLC). Like watching through a white overlay.

    1. It is recommended that you use Potplayer.
If you use VLC, try this:
Based on the VLC playback anomaly you described (the video appears to have a white overlay), combined with relevant technical information, the following is a comprehensive diagnosis and solution for this problem. The problem usually stems from video rendering settings, decoder configuration, hardware support or driver problems 47. The following are specific troubleshooting and repair steps, which are structured for easy operation:

      🛠️ Key problem diagnosis
‌White overlay phenomenon‌: Usually caused by incorrect configuration of the video renderer, resulting in white or blurred images (similar to the common problems in PotPlayer)7, or the decoder does not support video encoding (such as H.264/H.265) causing output abnormalities 48.
‌Common causes‌: VLC default settings may automatically select an incompatible renderer, demux module errors, outdated graphics card drivers, or hardware decoding does not support specific encoding formats (such as 4:2:2 10-bit)47.
🔧 Recommended solutions (sorted by priority)
‌Change video renderer settings‌ (most effective solution):

Open VLC and click the top menu: ‌Tools‌ > ‌Preferences‌.
Select ‌All‌ in the lower left corner to show advanced options.
      Navigate to: ‌Video‌ > ‌Output Module‌.
In the right drop-down menu, change the default ‌Auto‌ or ‌DirectX‌ to ‌OpenGL ES‌ or ‌Windows GDI‌ (more stable compatibility)7.
Save your settings and restart VLC to test video playback. This step solves more than 90% of white screen issues because it forces the use of a more basic rendering engine 79.
      ‌Fix demux decoder settings‌:

If renderer changes don’t work, check the demux module:
      In Preferences, navigate to: ‌Input/Codecs‌ > ‌Demultiplexer‌.
      Change ‌”Demuxer”‌ from ‌”h26x”‌ to ‌”avformat”‌ (FFmpeg-based generic decoder)4.
At the same time, in ‌“Codecs”‌ > ‌“Video Codecs”‌, make sure ‌“FFmpeg”‌ is enabled.
Restart VLC to verify the playback effect. This method is applicable to decoding errors of H.264/H.265 encoded videos 48.
‌ Restart VLC and update the graphics driver‌:

Forcefully close VLC (end the process in Task Manager), and then reopen it 9.
      Update the graphics driver:
Nvidia card users: Download the latest version of the driver from the official website (such as version 511.23 for best compatibility) 711.
Nvidia card/integrated graphics card: Disable Windows automatic driver updates (to avoid overwriting manufacturer optimizations), and manually install the latest version 11.
Restart the computer after the driver is updated, and then test VLC 711.
      ‌ Check hardware decoding support‌:

Confirm the video encoding format (such as H.265 YUV422P10). Some graphics cards (such as NVIDIA 3060) do not support 4:2:2 10-bit hardware decoding, and will be downgraded to software decoding, resulting in abnormalities 8.
Open the Task Manager while VLC is playing and observe the ‌“GPU”‌ > ‌“Video Decode”‌ load: if it is 0, it means that hardware decoding is not enabled.
